BSW Stage I

The Bavsound (formerly BSW) speaker upgrades are designed and tuned for each individual BMW model. Widely regarded as the definitive sound system upgrade in the BMW enthusiast community. This was the starting point of this vehicle’s sound system upgrade path. The Stage I kit includes:

Amps, EQs and Crossovers

To support the BSW Stage I system, the added Subwoofer and clean up the output from the new headunit, the factory amplifier was replaced by an Alpine 4 channel amp, and a bass equalizer was added between the 4 channel and dedicated subwoofer amp.

The entire vehicle audio system was rewired in order to use the low level RCA preouts of the headunit with better shielded speaker wires in order to eliminate alternator wine (a common E39 issue when redoing the sound system and retaining the lower gauge factory wiring).

The goal was to have a balanced audio experience, without overpowering bass, without doing extensive modifications to the door panels and rear shelf. This was one of the reasons for going with BSW’s solution, as their speakers are specifically made and tuned for the E39 chassis, and can be mounted in the factory locations without any modifications to the vehicle body.

Below you can see a general wiring diagram for most of the components in the system. This predated the SSL SQ-4 Equalizer, which was added at a later date between the 4 channel Alipne and the BSW speakers to provide a more granular control over the sound output.

Sound Insulation

To eliminate any remaining rattles and provide noise isolation (lower the amount of road noise coming in and minimize sound leakage to the outside world) all 4 doors, the trunk lid and trunk area were all covered in Dynamat Xtreme sound deadening material.

What's Dynamat?

"Dynamat Xtreme is a thin, super sticky butyl rubber bonded to an aluminum alloy skin. It is formulated with Vector™ Chemistry, and makes Dynamat Xtreme the most effective sound control material available. Dynamat Xtreme is very simple to cut and install.

The butyl rubber and heavy aluminum will stretch and contour better than any other product on the market without tearing. It will conform easily to all interior surfaces, and the sticky butyl rubber will adhere to a surface and stay in place without any special surface prep, and without leaving any odor or dripping material..."
